Cat has started meowing loudly. Advice?

  Our 17 year old cat is a talker, bu lately he walks through the house meowing loudly. He sounds like he's in pain. I haven't noticed any rhyme or reason to his behavior. Any thoughts?

  Hi there, this is Dr Linda, a small animal vet with 10 years of clinical experience.

   

  I'm sorry to hear about this new behaviour and know it must be a bit of a worry for you.

   

  When our older cats act like this, there are a few considerations.

  We would wonder about:

   

  • An overactive thyroid. Other signs would include an excessive hunger, weight loss and hyperactivity.
  • A source of pain such as joint disease or oral pain.
  • Feline dementia (cognitiive decline).

   

  It is best to have him checked over, to determine if there is a medical issue and if something can be done. If, for example, he has joint pain, he may respond well to some anti inflammatories and pain relief.
