My cat has really stinky breath. What can I do?

  • Twinkles breath is real stinky. What can I do?

  • Hi there, this is Dr Linda, a small animal vet with 10 years of clinical experience.

Bad breath (halitosis) will generally be caused by a medical issue, particularly if you have noticed the breath is worse than usual.

    We would consider e.g.

    • Periodontal disease
    • An oral abscess
    • Oral ulcers
    • An oral tumour
    • An infection of the skin around the mouth
    • Etc.

While certain foods like fish can cause a bad smell, this usually only sticks around a short while after eating.

Less commonly, a bad smell is caused by the cat licking their back end due to anal gland impaction. If this is the case, we would usually notice the excessive licking,

A vet check is best so we can examine Twinkles' mouth and determine what is going on. If there is dental disease, we may need to schedule a dental under anaesthetic.

We should hold off on any tooth brushing until we have a diagnosis as, if Twinkles has badly inflamed gums, brushing would cause pain and a tooth brush aversion.

Ensure Twinkles is eating well and consider wet and soft food if there are any struggles with chewing or hard food refusal.

Please be aware, online advice does not replace an in person vet opinion.
