Should I be concerned that my indoor cat is eating grass?

  • My cat, Stevie, is a 5 year old shorthair rescue. She is an indoor cat now, but we take her outside sometimes on a leash because she loves to sit by the window or the screen door watching everything going on. She usually doesn't venture around the yard too much, but lays down and eats grass sometimes. Is this normal or an indication for something lacking in her diet? Thank you!!

  • Hi Carolyn,

Most cats love to nibble on grass! This is completely normal. As long as Stevie is getting all her daily dietary needs met - then eating grass is not an indication that she is lacking anything. Even though grass is full of vitamins and is also a great source of fibre, most of these are already in her daily diet - therefore grass can be provided as a treat. There is grass that is sold specifically for cats and can be found at many pet stores as well as garden/nursery shops. It can be placed in gardens or placed in pots for indoor or outdoor use.
