Why does my cat wiggle her tail and pee on the wall and floor instead of in the box?

  • Why does Lily stand in the litter box and wiggle her tail and pee on the wall and floor? She poops okay in the litter box.

  • I'm sorry to hear about this issue with Lily.

This sounds like she is spraying.

If she is not yet spayed, this often resolves the issue.

If she lives with other pets, she may be acting territorial and 'marking' her area. To prevent this, we should ensure we have 1.5 trays pet cat in the home and that each cat has their own space, hiding areas and resources (like water bowls, cat trees, scratching posts etc.)

As this sort of thing can be linked to anxiety, do ensure she is getting lots of physical and mental stimulation so is not getting bored.

For 'stressy' cats things like Feliway plug ins and calming supplements can help.

In case of a medical issue like a UTI or urinary crystals, a vet visit and urine analysis is also a good idea here.

Anywhere she sprays should be cleaned up right away with an enzymatic cleaner, to try and prevent her doing it in the same spot again.

You may also find success by using an enclosed tray / one with a roof.
