Adopted male kitten is refusing to use the litter box

  • We adopted 2 4 month old kittens and the male kitten is refusing to use the litter box. What can we do.

  • Hi there, I am sorry to hear about this!
Most kittens are naturally clean so this is certainly a frustrating issue.

We'd wonder if the female has 'claimed' the trays or if he dislikes ising them after her.

There should be 3 litter trays, each in quiet areas of the home with little foot traffic.

It may be worth trialling a box with a roof and perhaps also trialling a new litter type, in case he has a preference.

Any accidents he is doing must be cleaned away rapidly with an enzymatic cleaner, to prevent the scent from lingering, which can lead to re-soiling.

If he always uses e.g. the same mat, remove it.

If he always pees on a certain bed, block access to that room.

For some cats, peeing outside of the tray is a way of them expressing their discontent. Do ensure he has all of his own resources and does not have to share with his sister. We should also provide lots of mental and physical stimulation so he is not becoming bored or stressed.

If signs persist, a vet check is best in case there could be an underlying issue such as a urinary infection.
