What can I do to alleviate my cat's constipation?

  • My 9 y/o male cat, fixed at around 4 months old. He throws up a lot & has constipation at least once a week.  What can I do to elivilate his constipation?  I make sure he has plenty of water at all times, eats wet food everyday & has playtime daily. Are there any OTC remedies for my poor baby??

  • Hi there, this is Dr Linda.

I am sorry to hear about these issues with your cat.

Given his ongoing digestive issues, I'd want to look into this at the vet clinic.

    I'd wonder about e.g.

    • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
    • A food allergy or intolerance
    • Hairballs
    • Chronic pancreatitis
    • Parasites
    • Etc.

I'd want him checked over and would also be considering some blood tests (checking e.g. Folate and Cobalamin) as well as an abdominal scan.

He may benefit from a hypoallergenic or hydrolysed diet.

If he is prone to hairballs, be sure to groom him daily and consider a paste such as Katalax.

The vet may issue some laxative e.g. Lactulose if the primary issue is constipation.

You are doing the right thing by offreing lots of fluid and encouraging activity.
