How do I stop a kitten from getting on my counters?

  • How do I stop a kitten from getting on my counters? I've tried spray bottles, but that doesn't work she seems to like that.

  • Hi deborah, this is Dr Linda!

Cats are naturally explorers, especially kittens. It is their nature to investigate their home and to climb up on surfaces.

We should ensure the experience is not rewarding for them, by never having food or toys on the counters.

We should also provide 'permissible' climbing experiences by providing things like cat trees that your kitten is allowed to climb.

When she seems to be about to jump on the counter, re-direct her attention elsewhere e.g. to an interactive toy she enjoys playing with.

Most cats dislike the sensation of sticky tape (sticky side up) or baking sheets on the surface; so leave them up for a few weeks until your kitten is no longer interested in the counter.
