How to stop cat from knocking over water dish?

  • My 7 month old kitten, 4 pounds, always turns over the water dishes when they have been filled. I tried to change to heavy glass but doesn't help. Any idea why he does this or how to get him to stop? He is the youngest of 8 indoor kitties.

  • Hi Cathie,

Sounds like you have a handful with this little guy;). This is most likely an amusement game for him. If you are reacting with attention towards him - either by way of talking, tapping, picky him up to or even shouting..then he is getting the attention from you that he desires. It will be difficult at first but the best thing you can do is avoid him when this happens. When he has spilled the bowls, do not immediately react. Ignore the moment and wait until his attention is somewhere else before you clean up the mess. If there is little time to spare - try tossing a toy in another direction for him to chase right away or use a wand toy to divert.
Some cats just like to play with water, so you may need to invest in strong sturdy bowls, such as ones designed for big dogs and place them ontop of large rubber mats or a large cookie tray.
