How to stop kittens from urinating in laundry basket?

  • Hi! I have two new young kitties who like to urinate in my clothes basket?  Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

  • Hi Deine,

Are they only urinating in the clothes basket? Or will they use the litterbox as well? Have they been neutered or spayed yet? Is it urine or are the kittens spraying to mark their territory?
Some kittens who were taken from their mother at an early age may not have been provided with the right kind of training and are basically self taught on the matter. They may have somehow associated this spot as the place to do their business and will continue to do so if they smell their scent in the area. Provide them each with their own litter box and rub catnip on the boxes to entice them. Place them gently inside the box (even if they don't use it right away) to demonstrate which is theirs. Even though they may decide to switch or even share.

Sometimes cats will spray areas to mark their territory-and they could be both trying to dominate this area as their own. Once cats have been spayed or neutered these kind of sporadic behaviours tend to decrease and they get themselves into a set routine.
Deterrent sprays have been known to be effective but you may not want to use them  on your clothes basket - so you may need to place the basket in an area they cannot access for the time being. Place a couple of fresh slices of oranges or lemons close to the basket. Cats generally do not like citrus and may avoid the area. Just keep an eye on them - for that could attract the interest of insects.
