Going poo outside litter box

  • We have 2 cats that will poo in front of litter box. We have tried different litters, with no change

  • I'm sorry to hear about this.

As you have 2 cats, make sure you have at least 3 trays.

We want them in quiet areas of the home with low foot traffic.

Some cats prefer a tray with a roof.

Ensure we are cleaning out the trays regularly, removing any feces as soon as it is passed.

If not possible because you're away from home, I'd consider a self-cleaning tray.

When they do poop outside the tray, never tell them off as this can cause increased anxiety.

Clean the poop away quickly and use an enzymatic cleaner to get rid of the smell.

If they always use the same area, block access to it. If it is e.g. a rug, we should take it away.

If their poo is soft, we'd wonder about a medical issue and this should be looked into by your vet.

In case of stress (common in those who share their home with other cats) be sure they have all of their own resources and are getting plenty of mental and physical stimulation.

They should also have their own 'hiding space' when they need time away from the other cat.

A Feliway Friends plug in is something to consider here.
